MODERn foreign languages

"to learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world." chinese proverb

Our vision

At Westbury Park, it is our vision that all children will be able to respond to those speaking in basic French, whilst being able to express themselves confidently in both written and spoken French.

Implementation

At Westbury Park, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi cultural society and provides an opening into other ways of life. A high quality languages education should foster children's curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Not only should the language itself be taught but also the celebrations and traditions of that country. By the end of Year 6, we hope that children will have a love of France; a country explored through the teaching of the language throughout Key Stage 2 leaving them with a firm foundation to continue studying languages in KS3.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, children are exposed to different languages and cultures through songs and stories. They celebrate the different languages spoken by children across the school both in class and in assemblies. Beginning in Year 3, children have three terms of French learning each year using the 'Kapow' programme of study, in addition to other resources. Areas covered include numbers, colours, conversational french, shopping, food and drink and the classroom.

impact

Children feel confident to experiment with language, to speak clearly and with good pronunciation . They will also have an understanding of the background of the language and be interested in the culture of the countries that speak it. Learning a language complements other subjects and supports children in becoming global citizens.
