The Role of the Governors
Westbury Park School became an academy on August 1, 2012, and at that point "ownership" of the school passed to the Westbury Park School Trust. The Trust, run by the Trustees, has direct responsibility for the premises and employment of the staff, as well as the quality of teaching and learning at the school.
On conversion to academy status the former governors of the maintained school became Trustees and governors of the academy.
The Governing Board meets once a month, but the detailed business of the school is handled by three committees: Asset Management, Personnel and Wellbeing and School Improvement.
Asset Management has responsibility for the budget, health and safety and buildings maintenance.
Personnel and Wellbeing has responsibility for staffing issues.
School Improvement has responsibility for the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum, behaviour, SEN provision and inclusion.
Governors also have a role in handling complaints against the school.
School governors are unpaid and together make up the largest volunteer force across the country.

The governors are drawn from three different areas: staff; parents; the local community. The Governing Board can also co-opt additional help from individuals with particular expertise.
The Board is made up of six parent governors, six community governors and five staff governors.
Why are parents on the Governing Body?
Parent governors bring the views of parents to the Governing Body, but they speak and act as individuals. They should not be thought of as delegates or "mouthpieces" of the parents; they do not vote for all parents in general. They have equal status in the work of the Governing Body and have voting rights.
School governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. They must act together; they cannot act individually.
Becoming a Governor
Being a parent governor can be an enjoyable, worthwhile and challenging way to help the school. It is also a great opportunity to get to know the school community better and work with a great team of people.
Governors commit to the role for four years and when a vacancy comes up for a parent governor all parents are notified through the school newsletter. All parents are encouraged to consider becoming a governor and if more than one person puts their name forward then an election of all parents takes place.
Full training is offered to help support governors in their roles.
The role of governor is an exciting and challenging one that offers a unique opportunity to understand more about how the school works and to help shape its future direction.
