Year One Curriculum
Our aim in Year One is to develop social skills and help the children move forward from play-based learning to a more formal approach.
We teach phonics every day, following the Letters & Sounds programme. We work hard on the technical skills of writing such as punctuation, finger spaces and letter formation. We follow the new 2015 curriculum and try to base our writing within inspiring topics that the children can relate to.
We run Group Time activites in the afternoons. Children work in small groups developing a range of skills. This carousel of activities can include an independent play activity, an art activity with a parent or a learning activity with a teacher. We end the day with a story or a song.
We teach lots of different mathematical skills within our daily Numeracy lesson. We focus on forming numbers correctly, counting objects accurately, knowing our number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, spotting and extending number patterns and counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. We use practical resources to help us make sense of abstract concepts.
