Writing

Our vision

English sits at the heart of our curriculum – it is through language that children learn to form concepts, connect ideas and express themselves eloquently. Through literacy, in all its forms, children learn to both make sense of the world and shape their place within it. We aim to inspire children to develop a love for reading and writing and we work closely together to promote curiosity and enthusiasm for language from Reception to year 6- and beyond! By the time children leave Westbury Park Primary School, they are original and imaginative writers with an exceptionally wide-ranging vocabulary; they are able to understand sophisticated texts and express themselves in a wide range of contexts.

WRITING LESSONS

Engaging literature forms the foundation of all our writing lessons from Reception to Year 6: whether it is the beautiful story of Star in a Jar or the darkly brilliant fairy tale of Hansel & Gretel, children are immersed into texts before being introduced to new genres and pieces of writing. We follow the structure: Immerse, Analyse, Plan, Write giving children the opportunity to really enjoy and appreciate the book before having the chance to write and express their ideas.

SPELLING at WP

Spelling has been a focus for us at Westbury Park this year and we have a variety of ways in which we work to teach and learn spelling patterns.

Children are taught spelling patterns in discrete spelling lessons before being tested weekly on a short list that is rehearsed at home. These spellings might be differentiated depending on accessibility.

Children have a list of SPELLING ATTACK words that are the statutory spellings split across 6 terms. Each term has between 10-12 words to focus on and these words are not tested but are regularly rehearsed through spelling doodles, spelling rainbows and in books.

Teachers focus on rehearsal of spellings within written work. Up to 3 incorrect spellings that are identified by the adult are written correctly in purple pen. These are words that have been taught previously in that year or in years before.

Spellzone and Nessy are used as spelling interventions to help children with dyslexia or who just find spelling tricky. This can be accessed both at home and at school.
